Torie Wheatley, Ph.D. (she/her/they) is a 9-12th grade high school English educator and mindset & management instructor for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Dr. Wheatley’s praxis centers on culturally relevant pedagogy and the psychosocial wellbeing of her students. In her work, she supports positive student identity through mindfulness practices influenced by hip-hop culture and teacher wellness that supports teacher retention. Dr. Wheatley’s research focuses on how hip-hop pedagogy, culturally responsive practices to support Black and Brown communities, and trauma informed practices for curating professional development that advocates and supports Black LGBTQIA+ folx and justice-involved youth. Dr. Wheatley received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an Urban Education concentration from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. She is also a yoga instructor and enjoys volunteering in the community, hanging out in nature, and enjoying time with friends, family and her furbaby!
